Cultural Preservation & Education Program

Each week, the BAIC sponsors a cultural and youth activity at the Patterson Park Recreation Center in East Baltimore City. The cultural class is directed under the knowledgeable and experienced champion powwow dancer, Keith Colston of the Tuscarora and Lumbee Nations. Keith's focus is on kids, and developing self-image and self-respect through the culture as an expression of prayer in motion. Keith's unique approach energizes the native youth to distinguish themselves from the surrounding urban environment, and restores pride in their rich heritage that come forth from the many diverse Native American communities.

The cultural classes are so important the Keith Colston and the Board of Directors have made personal sacrifice to financially support the program to ensure its continuance while public and private funding are being sought to develop it further. At Tuesday night culture classes held at the Patterson Park Recreation Center, young people learn about and participate in traditional dance and other activities. Thursday night classes at the Baltimore American Indian Center provide a variety of activities (beadwork, making costumes, broadening the study of Indian arts and culture) and bring children and adults together to participate in arts and culture projects.
